Crick Boat Show 2025 – A Colourful Day on the Cut

This weekend, I had the absolute joy of visiting the Crick Boat Show 2025, proudly known as Britain’s Biggest Inland Waterways Festival. Held annually over the late May Bank Holiday in Northamptonshire’s Crick Marina, the show is a vibrant celebration of canal life, creativity, and community.

First launched over 20 years ago, the Crick Boat Show is organised by Waterways World in partnership with the Canal & River Trust and Crick Marina. The event brings together enthusiasts, traders, artists, and boaters from across the country—and beyond—to celebrate everything that makes life on the cut so special. Whether you’re dreaming of buying a boat, already live afloat, or simply fancy a unique day out, Crick offers a little something for everyone.

A Turning Point on the Water

Having explored a large stretch of the inland waterways over the years, I’m no stranger to the classic 60ft narrowboat. But at Crick, something shifted. I had the privilege of stepping aboard a selection of wide beam boats, and I completely fell in love. The sense of space, the gentle luxury, and the ease of movement they offered felt like the right fit for the next chapter of my boating life.

With mobility becoming more of a consideration, I could see myself living comfortably on one of these beautiful wide beams. And for those moments when I miss the narrow, winding cuts, I’m lucky enough to have friends with boats who would welcome me aboard.

A Familiar Face and a Full-Circle Moment

One of the most heartwarming moments of the day was bumping into a dear old friend—dressed as a flamboyant pirate with a rainbow beard and cheeky grin! But behind the costume is someone very special to me: the person who first introduced me to boating and, more importantly, to the rich world of Canal Art.

It felt serendipitous, standing together at a festival celebrating the very culture and creativity that shaped so much of who I am today. We shared stories, smiles, and a cuddle that felt like coming home.

Shopping, Stories & Spoon Rings

Crick is a treasure trove of wonders for any boat lover. The stalls were brimming with everything from chandlery essentials and handcrafted ropework to floating home interiors, eco innovations, and nautical gifts. One of my favourite finds? A silver spoon ring, mounted with a 100-year-old sixpence—elegant, meaningful, and steeped in history. It now sits on my finger, a small reminder of a beautiful day.

A Celebration of Canal Art

I couldn’t miss the Canal & River Trust’s traditional arts tent, where the incredible Terence was teaching “Roses & Castles” to an eager crowd. His painted kettles, water cans, and colourful panels were absolutely breathtaking—a true celebration of the heritage I hold so dear.

It was beautiful to see so many people engaging with this endangered art form. As someone who teaches and champions Canal Art myself, it was heartening to witness its power to inspire, connect, and calm.

Boats, Buskers, and Belonging

I stepped aboard boat after boat, each with its own story and style. Some featured rustic stoves and country charm, while others offered sleek, modern interiors with clever space-saving touches. Every vessel felt like a floating dream. Add in live music, delicious street food, real-ale tents, and boat-handling demos—and it really was a feast for all the senses.

There were also expert seminars, heritage displays, kids’ activities, and a chance to meet industry professionals—all pulled together by a huge effort from volunteers, partners, and the passionate team behind Waterways World and the Canal & River Trust.

Reflections

I left Crick with a heart full of inspiration. A boat show may sound like an event for the mechanically minded, but to me, it was a festival of home, art, friendship, and dreams. Whether you’re an experienced boater, an art lover, or just canal-curious—Crick Boat Show is a must.

And yes, I’ll definitely be back? Absolutely
